  • Why George Bush is Insane

    Why George Bush is Insane
by Harold Pinter; March 30, 2007

(NOTE:  Harold Pinter is a British playwright, born in 1930 and winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 2005.  He's still alive.  This was originally published in 2002.  Change the word "Iraq" to "Iran" near the end of the article, and it's just as relevant today as it was then.)

Earlier this year I had a major operation for cancer. The operation and its
after-effects were something of a nightmare. I felt I was a man unable to swim
bobbing about under water in a deep dark endless ocean. But I did not drown and
I am very glad to be alive.

However, I found that to emerge from a personal nightmare was to enter an
infinitely more pervasive public nightmare - the nightmare of American hysteria,
ignorance, arrogance, stupidity and belligerence; the most powerful nation the
world has ever known effectively waging war against the rest of the world. "If
you are not with us you are against us" President Bush has said. He has also
said "We will not allow the world's worst weapons to remain in the hands of the
world's worst leaders". Quite right. Look in the mirror chum. That's you.

The US is at this moment developing advanced systems of "weapons of mass
destruction" and it prepared to use them where it sees fit. It has more of them
than the rest of the world put together. It has walked away from international
agreements on biological and chemical weapons, refusing to allow inspection of
its own factories. The hypocrisy behind its public declarations and its own
    actions is almost a joke.

The United States believes that the three thousand deaths in New York are
the only deaths that count, the only deaths that matter. They are American
deaths. Other deaths are unreal, abstract, of no consequence.

The three thousand deaths in Afghanistan are never referred to.

The hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children dead through US and British
sanctions which have deprived them of essential medicines are never referred
    to.

The effect of depleted uranium, used by America in the Gulf War, is never
referred to. Radiation levels in Iraq are appallingly high. Babies are born with
no brain, no eyes, no genitals. Where they do have ears, mouths or rectums, all
that issues from these orifices is blood.

The two hundred thousand deaths in East Timor in 1975 brought about by the
Indonesian government but inspired and supported by the United States are never
    referred to.

The half a million deaths in Guatemala, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua,
Uruguay, Argentina and Haiti, in actions supported and subsidised by the United
    States are never referred to.

The millions of deaths in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are no longer referred
    to.

The desperate plight of the Palestinian people, the central factor in world
    unrest, is hardly referred to.

But what a misjudgement of the present and what a misreading of history
    this is.

People do not forget. They do not forget the death of their fellows, they
do not forget torture and mutilation, they do not forget injustice, they do not
forget oppression, they do not forget the terrorism of mighty powers. They not
only don't forget. They strike back.

The atrocity in New York was predictable and inevitable. It was an act of
retaliation against constant and systematic manifestations of state terrorism on
the part of the United States over many years, in all parts of the world.

In Britain the public is now being warned to be "vigilant" in preparation
for potential terrorist acts. The language is in itself preposterous.

How will - or can - public vigilance be embodied? Wearing a scarf over your
mouth to keep out poison gas? However, terrorist attacks are quite likely, the
inevitable result of our Prime Minister's contemptible and shameful subservience
to the United States. Apparently, a terrorist poison gas attack on the London
Underground system was recently prevented. But such an act may indeed take
place. Thousands of school children travel on the London Underground every day.
If there is a poison gas attack from which they die, the responsibility will
rest entirely on the shoulders of our Prime Minister. Needless to say, the Prime
Minister does not travel on the underground himself.

The planned war against Iraq is in fact a plan for premeditated murder of
thousands of civilians in order, apparently, to rescue them from their
    dictator.

The United States and Britain are pursuing a course which can lead only to
an escalation of violence throughout the world and finally to catastrophe.

It is obvious, however, that the United States is bursting at the seams to
attack Iraq. I believe that it will do this - not just to take control of Iraqi
oil - but because the US administration is now a bloodthirsty wild animal. Bombs
are its only vocabulary. Many Americans, we know, are horrified by the posture
of their government but seem to be helpless.

Unless Europe finds the solidarity, intelligence, courage and will to
challenge and resist US power Europe itself will deserve Alexander Herzen's
definition (as quoted in the Guardian newspaper in London recently) "We are not
the doctors. We are the disease."

  • Thank you; this answers many questions I've had.  It's frightening and sickening to me, yet I would choose to live nowhere else.

  • I guess but sometimes i feel beautiful but sometimes i wonder what beautiful is. stay blessed

  • War is ugly, always. While I feel like this war was entered into for bogus reasons it was bound to happen. I am less likely to look kindly on an outsider criticizing my country than one who lives and has their citizenship here. However, I am so disillusioned by politics and apathetic when it comes to any and all candidates running for president in the upcoming election. I wonder if we will see anything other than corruption ever again. I used to be such a good little patriot.

RYC: Thanks for any and all good thoughts and prayers for DD#2. She's still very sick, but I am hoping she takes a turn for the better soon.

  • Can't argue with those words.

  • hahahaha, , , i normally dont like to engage in topics like global warming, , , no one is gonna change no ones mind on the matter.

i dont know if nuking iran will solve the problem, , , couldnt hurt i dont guess if we are going downhill as fast as owl says we are.  and of course when iran nukes us, , , that may help too, , , a little nuclear winter to offset global warming.

and you in fact hit the nail on the head if there is indeed a problem, , , therefore i believe owl would be best ingaged selling trees and grass seeds rather than ozone pills.  at least his product would show signs of recovery.

i can tell by the article you posted, , , you like jr almost as much as i do, , , our reasons are obviously different, , , but again you are right, , , jr is a little insane, , , i would lean more towards idiot tho.   i mean, , , im insane, , , but not really an idiot. (in my personal opinion)

  • Can't agree with this philosophy.  It's quite biased.

RYC: You'd be surprised.  The castle was an hour outside of Edinburgh and we rented it for a whol eweek, so it actually turned out less cost per person than a plain jane hotel in the city.  And it was cool.

  • *waves* hiya! how are ya? did ya get my email?...i think i emailed ya last week sometime. :)

    Hope all is well.

    interesting article. :)

  • Blimey!! Pinter didn't pull any punches! and he's quite right of course. Hello, I'm

    Tomesara.

  • I agree somewhat, but I can't help but feel that it's easy to find fault in the things "we" as a country do...but I bet if we were in those shoes we might sing a different tune.

  • Regarding your comment to Mejicojohn: I have to laugh anytime I hear the word "Douchebag" ...... once I heard a prepubescent sixth grader call another sixth grader that, and I thought it so cute because he must have had no idea what a douchebag really is. But that's not why it cracks me up, it's because that day at lunch, I told another teacher about it, and she almost died laughing, because she said that females haven't used douchebags in decades.

  • hahahahahaha, , , , re your comment, , , smoking and my neck, , , , im 60 years old, , , well, , , 59 in that video i guess, , , you cant look 18 forever, , , and i wonder when i can claim to have slipped by the quick death of cigarettes.

  • Just a guest spot...but THIS http://www.xanga.com/travelerblue/581321243/book-review.html?nextdate=last might answer some of your questions

  • and here i thought you were going to limit it to one reason

  • Excellent article.

And I find it incredible that so many people still have their heads in the sand.

  • Hi Eccentrique:

Do you know there's a contest on my blog, right?  Just identify 7 videos and you would be one of the 10 winners for a 1 month subscription to the newest dating site breezedate.com.  Best timing to watch is during 1pm (eastern time) when I post a new one daily.  See ya later and thanx for viewing my site. Tell your friends about this awesome contest!!!

  • RYC: he also addresses his "exceptions" in the non-exceptional fashion of failing to recognize others' involvements and, often, others' primary causes in the specific incidents he cites.  Does a double hypocrisy equal an honesty?  Hm....

    Yeah, the castle was awesome.

  • His point is well taken...people do not forget. I know I won't. It perpetrates a cycle of violence that will probably never end until the world as we know it ends. Sad, but the human condition.

  • I'm sorry Eccentrique..

I guess I didn't explain that very well... but it's just you have to name the artist and the song played on that day.  If you got a list of 7 artists and their songs and e-mail it, you win a month subcription.  It's gonna be monthly so as your suggestion... I may include old ones! Take care Eccentrique.  See... Warcraft is the new pub!

  • While I probably agree with Pinter - the real insanity there was his PM, l'il Tony Blair. Bush did what he did for domestic politics (without a war he would never have been re-elected) and for personal profit (all his biggest contributors have earned plenty from this game). Blair just did it because living at 10 Downing Street seems to infect almost everyone with that good ol' Brit imperialist strain.

  • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but i havent been feeling very beautiful lately. stay blessed

  • yeah. sigh.  but...those three thousand dead were american three thousand.  until the world finds a way to operate as a single unit, and stop acting out of fear and lack, this is my country.  centuries of misery inflicted by colonial powers and bequeathed to the united states as european countries became "mature powers" are not going to be forgotten, oh no.  but I did nothing to those people any more than i owned black slaves.  they will bring the war back here.  they will take it out on us as much and as often as they can.  i think dubya is a blot on the face of humanity and he had no clue as to the resilient human element we face in Iraq.  i think he had no clue what to do once there other than "just put in a new government and it will be all ok."  Yeah he's a goddamned dry drunk.  but i'd rather occupy their attention in another time zone rather than allow them the time and energy to arrive on our shores again.  hopefully any future action will carefully and thoughtfully take into account the intricacies of the situation.

  • RYC: LOL, you were right on time with that!

  • aww john you are beautiful. so now stay blessed

  • ryc: i'm really not all that wise. just rambly.

as for simon, i'd say daniel is his carbon copy, but daniel's a year or so older than simon, as simon was a year older than i am. they're so alike it's eerie.

  • I think I tend to agree with cynarajane on this one.  In any case war, for any reason, is hell.  Didn't someone famous once say that?  It sounds so familiar.......

    Tim

  • Oh and my little kitty picture?  You are absolutely right.  That is what I do at work all day.

  • Many, many years ago I dated a flight engineer, a lifer. He was tough as nails...not scared of much of anything that I ever knew of. The one exception...and I quote, "If we ever go to war with Iraq or Iran, we'll lose. I've never met a people more insane in their hatreds. They scare me to death." I'm sure he's retired now...and shaking in his boots.

Since the days of our founding fathers, we have routinely stolen, killed, lied, cheated, etc., etc., etc., to take what we wanted...legality be damned. Why are we so surprised that it is still a way of life?

  • i dont know if id call that a trip, , , ciudad acuna is only 150 miles from here, , , i just havent started off in that direction for quite some time, , , from here to acuna is 150 miles, , , from here to piedras negras is 150 miles, , , from here to nuevo laredo is 150 miles.

  • ryc: yeah, i like to think so too. :)

  • lol john i know you would never push me at all besides you already know that i have a crush on you. stay blessed

  • John, I truly applaud you for shedding light on George Bush's path of idocity and pigeonheadedness. It's mind boggling why the world's most powerful military has a leader who's brain is highly questionable. But I give props to Bush for being "brilliant" enough to somehow brainwash Americans to vote for him, not once but twice, to put him in charge. Some wonders never cease.

RYC: *blush* I'm not a good writer by any far stretch of the imagination. I'm trained to write up lab reports; creative writing was my brother's forte. Still, my ego is estatic that a talented writer like you would think so highly of me *hugs* If I could have you as an editor one day in the distant future, the New York Times Bestseller's List could very much be a reality! ^_^ Happy Easter, John, and take care of yourself.  And don't eat too many chocolate eggs ~ share them with the Easter Bunny because I hear through the grapevine that he's BFF with Santa *grins*

  • I haven't read truer words for quite a while. I have to digest it for a while. S

  • This article says it all and says it well.  WE are a greedy, arrogant country.  I had the distinct fortune of being able to hear Gandhi's grandson speak at my university today and he talked about how Bush said "if you are not for us you're against us."  I too am amazed at how it's possible for some people to still not get it.  Are they not aware of the huge profits big american corporations are making off of this war?  WE think that the rules apply to everyone but us - how did we get so self-centered, so self-righteous, so ethnocentric?  If another country disregarded the recommendations of the United Nations to not go to war, or in practices of torture against their prisoners, or refused to allow inspections of their weapons productions the US would be up in arms, but when we do it, it's ok.

Did you know that the people of the United States make up 4% of the world's population, but consume (or waste) 45% of the world's resources?  If that doesn't show what a the greedy, power-hungry capitalist society the US is then they have blinders on.  One of the things Arun Gandhi said in his talk today was that it is sometimes easy for us to sit back and think that nothing is wrong, that racism is dead, that sexism no longer exists, that poverty and hunger and disease are the problem of developing nations and not ours - it is because SO MANY OF US ARE BENEFICIARIES OF UNEARNED PRIVILEGES - particularly white, middle class people - and men more than women.

I could go on forever, but i should get off my soap box before I annoy too many people. This article is right on - thanks for posting it - i'm going to share it on my online policy forum for school.

  • FABULOUS post John!

    justsayin....

  • ryc first the "shoe" thing.  Knowing the writer I bet she did wait.  I agree with you on the way things are shot today for TV and movies.  Shoot on CSI shows they can make something as mundane as filling a test tube look exciting!  Music, lighting and all really add up.

  • Great article thanks for sharing it. Hope you have a excellent Easter. Judi

  • I can't resist, John. You know that I go out of my way not to talk about religion, but sometimes, with the right people...I can't help it. I read your questions on Lisa's last post and I wonder if you really wanted to know, or if you had formed your own opinion on the matter. If I may, I'd just like to tell you what I think ==>

"...tell his disciples AND Peter.." <== I think that the explanation is simple enough. Peter was a disciple, no doubt...but he was THE MAN. Jesus tells him so (Mathew 16:19) in front of the other disciples. Throughout the New Testament there is in fact a point to make this separation (that Peter was in charge). It  wasn't just the Angel(s) at the sepulchre but also in the writing of the other disciples, ie- Acts 2 37  or Acts 5:29 and several others if you look. And to be honest, it kind of bugs me when people choose to remember Peters denial of KNOWING Jesus (not his divinity) 3 times, as if to insinuate that he did something cowardly. Just hours before he was the only one that tried to protect Jesus from an angry mob by taking a sword and cutting off someone's ear! Not to metion the fact that after everyone ran...he followed Jesus and sat within hearing distance from Jesus even though he was surrounded by enemies and placing himself in danger. I think that him "weeping bitterly" after the cock crowed was more because of the realization that prophesy was going to have to be fulfilled -not only Jesus's prediction of what would happen with Peter, but also THAT JESUS WOULD HAVE TO DIE. I mean, can't we give the man the benefit of the doubt? Just an opinion, John.

  • ^^^Yay! Your comment got people talking...those are always the best kind!^^^

Yep, I must agree, Peter was a disciple. But, I do think he denied him out of fear. It's easy for us now to mentally put ourselves in Peter's position and project what we think we would have felt if we were him, but I think it's clear that he was trying to save his own butt at certain points.

  • no, , , everyone came out on top this time, , , i made the whole trip and no one had to die.

yes, , , that would be what is considered the red light district, , , altho really any bar in mexico has women for rent, , , in the red light district there are men waiters and the women are only for rent.  in most bars in mexico, women are the waitresses and the waitresses are for rent.  and they are also free to have a drink with you during business hours, , , they usually arent paid for their work and they of course make their money from tips, , , drinks people buy them, , , and of course if they are rented, , ,

actually its not that i couldnt afford any, , , hahahahahahahahaha, , , i dont partake of that vice. . . i do like to go window shopping.  and penny row, , , no, , , some of the best merchandise is found on penny row believe it or not, , , it just gets them out of the party atmosphere and they just sit, , , or stand in front of their rooms, , , no loud music to contend with or trying to hustle men to buy them drinks.  plus in the bars a lot of time, , , in the expensive bars anyway, , , they have to double as strippers, , , and just over all , , , a lot of work, , , penny row just makes life a lot simpler, , , and i like to circle around the block just to see whats available, , , and whats available can sometimes surprise you.    and penny row is an exaggeration, , , in nuevo laredo, , , prices are $10-$20.  and if you want frills, , , then the price goes up of course.

boys town, , , refered to as la zona, , , or the zone of tolerance, , , prostitution is legal, , , in the other bars, theoreticlly, it is illegal.  there is a police station at the gate to handle trouble makers  and you dont want to wind up there, , , , hahahahahaha, , , ive been there, , , not for making trouble, , , for taking pictures, , , but then im a reporter, , , and i did escape with my pictures the one time i was there (at the police station)  trouble makers get quite a good taste of nightsticks there, , , not a pleasant situation.

and yes, , , it is a rip off, , , didnt see any in acuna, , , there are a couple of tour guides in nuevo laredo, , , if they are there (legal ones) it is best to use one, , , they can keep you out of trouble and see that you have a good time, , , on your own, , , you are liable to find yourself broke with nothing to show for it, , , everyone there is quite talented in the art of taking your money.  the waiters on the top of the list.

at the very least go with someone who knows the ropes, , , a new comer alone or with other new comers, , , , hahahahahahahahahaha, , , i dont even want to think about it.

  • i should just write a book, , , but im lazy.

  • Interesting article.
    Tricia

  • RYC: Yes...I do think that is what I want to do. But sometimes something else comes along and looks so much more appealing. My mother is now on a mission to get me to go into being a Physical Therapist instead of a nurse, due to the fact that they make almost double the money as a nurse, and only have to go to school the same amount of time as a nurse...but I don't know about that....*Shakes head* I'm not in it just for money. I want to know what I'm doing is right, and that it's what God wants me to be doing, does that make any sense?

  • sure we can keep that between us. stay blessed

  • RYC: Thanks for all the advice and encouragement! Really need it! Thank you again! :)

  • Yeah Her song is out there! Hey, thanks for stopping by...Have a wonderful week.Oh yaeh...I love the profile pic!!!!

  • My mom actually senses evil when she sees Bush. And my mom is the saintliest person I know, and when she has a gut reaction I always listen to it. I never thought that way about Bush, I mean I detest most of his policies but have always just regarded him as imbecilic. But when my mom said that, it made me think twice about him, indeed.
