Random Factoid
According to Barmeister.com, five of the 20 most popular bars in the United States and Canada are located in Illinois. Of those five, three can be found in the Peoria area.
Ten Illinois bars are included in the top 50. I've never been to any of them. The closest I've come to greatness is Big Al's in Peoria, #66, and Murphy's Pub in Champaign, a student bar, at #78. Big Al's is a strip joint, known more for its lap dances than for its margaritas. And Murphy's is...well, a student bar. Who votes for these things??
Anyway, eat your hearts out, all you other states.

I'll stop now before I start dribbling ... again.
Well, going to all these places wil keep you really busy for a while. It'll give your liver a real workout. How about you just feel proud to have them so close and call it good. Have a greatv rest of the weekend, John.
If you ever make it to Wichita (but really, I can't blame you if you don't) you have to go to Kirby's...a little hole in the wall by WSU campus. That and the Cedars are the two best bars in town.
BEERS!!! Yum! PA is the home of the great brewpubs though!!
BTW, look at that beauty in my hand. Was taken at Dogfish Head, Rehoboth Beach, MD. Great beer.
I guess I shall have to miss them. I will visit vicariously through you!
Beerdrinking will play in Peoria.
Supposedly San Francisco has the most bars per square mile, and they're open from 6am to 2am. I hardly know about it except for two historic (beat generation/beatnik) bars in North Beach that I have visited though quite rarely over the years.
And I'll never visit any of them. Sigh. Oh well.
Okay, if Murphy's is the 78th best bar in America, then I really don't have much to look forward to.
What would have been even better would have been for Big Al's to come in at #69....teeheehee.
Hi, John,
I wonder what criteria the BarMeister uses to evaluate those taverns.
It will be awesome hanging out with you later this week!

Part of New York's problem is that I live here. Any bar that had to depend on my business would be bankrupt in about 2 nanoseconds.
I'm getting an uncontrollable urge to hop in the car and drive to Illinois! S

I guess I didn't realize you are from Illinois.
Yes! I will be in Illinois soon to perform my own follow-up study on these findings.
LoL
Rockaway, NY...where i grew up, used to be in the Guiness book of records for the most bars per capita
Alas, it is a dry county here. I had to explain that term to my landlady in Ireland FOUR times before she finally got it.
ryc: Khukuri - traditional mini-sword used by the troops in Nepal and India. It is traditionally gifted to respected officers when they accept new appointments, accept promotions or retire. My friend accepted a commission into the US Army at the same time he graduated, it felt like the appropos gift.
Did I ever tell you that part of my family was from Illinois? No doubt drinkers among the lot...
ryc: Now stop that kind of talk...insignificant my foot! Thanks for the welcome back.
i have a good friend from high school that lives in peoria. she and her husband are both engineers for caterpillar although she has taken a year off because their son was born with heart problems and has had to undergo several heart surgeries in his first year of life. i have two other friends in illinois - one who is a neurologist right in chicago and another who lives in some suburb - i have to admit i don't know which one, she and i only exchange christmas cards.
as for the bars - we visited several when we were there a couple of weeks ago - none that i found completely fantastic, but then i'm getting old. i am not a fan of strip clubs, never have been, or lap dances given by perfect strangers - guess i'm an old fashioned girl
