Back In the Day
Here's what I used to do for a "living". No, not SET the fires, silly!
This is a fire we had here locally in the business district the other morning. A news photographer took the photos; I wasn't even awake yet.
Amazingly, no one was injured, and only the one commercial building was destroyed. This is when firefighters actually EARN their "big bucks".

How you ever got that fire out is beyond my imagination. As far as I know all the stations around here are volunteer and have a lot of fund raising to do,I do not know why thay are not paid .
Wow, what fabulous pictures. I've always been fascinated with fire. So beautiful, and so horribly destructive at the same time. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a firefighter out there who doesn't earn their pay (and it should be tripled).
San Francisco supposedly has a tradition of honoring firefighters due to the large number of fires that burned down the city in the 1800s not to mention it wasn't the 1906 earthquake that did so much damage as the three-day fire that followed. Certainly any civic oriented person will say that, but I don't know if it's in the consciousness of 21st century SF since a lot of tradition gets lost in a city of immigrants. Not to knock immigrants since they all bring in something new, just the fact that immigration plus the balancing outmigration doesn't lend to tradition.
On a completely different story, I hope I remained an anonymous informant viz a viz the discovery of your image on Cakalusa's site? If you told him it was me that leaked no problem I guess. I just remain scratching my head wondering where in the tarnation he got YOUR picture out of everyone on xanga and everywhere else for that particular message.
@Kevin72 - No, I didn't mention the source of my information. And perhaps young Cakalusa felt that YOUR powdered wig, Kevin, was somehow too dated to go with the joke?
The picture is one of those meld photoshops if you look a bit closer, so it's as much the future as it is the past. I saw an Obama/Lincoln meld last week via FARK and should have copied that, it was less ambiguous, showed both features more clearly.
Looks hot.
Holy cow. Looks scary.
Weren't firemen bookburners??? Oops, that's the future
Surprised you don't have a Miriam Makeba tribute
@EminemsRevenge - My entire show last week was a Miriam Makeba tribute - mostly done by recording the audio portion of YouTube videos. You can listen to the show on eSnips if you didn't catch it live. I also burned a 70-minute CD.
To me....fires are better left as a spectator sport. Firemen and policemen have always been my heroes... more than doctors or sports figures.
@Lanateyony - Thanks - and I mean that sincerely - but talk is cheap. The doctors and sports figures (and actors and lawyers and CPAs and many others) are paid far more. Not to mention these fuckin' Wall Street sycophants, who perform basically no service of any real value. Gotta love capitalism, where the rating agencies are paid by the companies they rate.
HOLY~ That is one BIG fire.
Reminds me of a few years ago when some idiot tried to burn down his store for the insurance money... wound up burning up half of Downtown!
Wasn't pretty. And that idiot stayed on the news, when he was denied an insanity plea... he poked his own eye out with a pen during his trial... just wow.
Enough blabbering... But thanks for the photos!
Amberley
