  • Arthur Poindexter Lunch has posted some sobering information about a new virulent strain of STD known as "Gonorrhea Lectim".  It's important for you to be aware of it.  But if you go to Arthur's blog and leave a comment, for God's sake don't smile.  Arthur doesn't like smileys or what he calls "ell-oh-ells", particularly when appended to poorly-honed thoughts.

Meanwhile here's the article I came across that compares the present political climate to the McCarthy era.  The Limbaughtistas among us won't see the parallels, of course, but in both cases fear of a REAL enemy was blown out of proportion and exploited to serve a politican or politicians' personal agenda.

I tend to give a slight bit more credence to a Republican who is levelling the charges against Bush, Inc.

AMERICANS ARE RUNNING OUT OF PATIENCE WITH THEIR 'WAR PRESIDENT'

Gen Brent Scowcroft, national security advisor to Bush's father, accused Bush Jr of being 'wrapped around the little finger' of Israel's PM Ariel Sharon.

    By Eric Margolis

[Award winning author, columnist, and broadcaster Eric S. Margolis has covered 14 wars.]

WASHINGTON - Whoever advised President George Bush to escape the storm of criticism he faces over Hurricane Katrina, Iraq, and the Libby CIA case by flying to Argentina for a free trade summit should be sent in chains to Guantanamo.

Bush's venture was an embarrassing diplomatic failure and the most humiliating fiasco faced by a US leader in Latin America since Vice President Richard Nixon got mobbed in 1958. Bush was left looking isolated and confused, while his nemesis, Venezuela's boisterous merengue-marxist leader, Hugo Chavez, rallied Latinos to his side and gleefully mocked the US president.

Now, Bush has returned to Washington rent by factional warfare, growing outrage over Bush-Cheney's defense of torture, and new polls showing a majority of Americans believe the president deceived the US into war.

The long simmering conflict between America's national security establishment and neoconservative extremists burst into public with the criminal indictment of VP Dick Cheney's powerful neocon chief of staff, Lewis Libby, for perjury and obstruction of justice in the Valerie Plame CIA case.

The FBI's Libby investigation could produce a blizzard of embarrassing evidence of how the White House's necon Praetorian Guard engineered the US into war. So bad is the mood in Washington, a member of CIA's founding families calls the neocons 'fifth columnists.'

Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former Secretary of State Colin Powell's chief of staff for 16 years, publicly charged a 'cabal' of neocons had 'hijacked' US foreign policy and had driven the nation into a trumped up war - what this column has said since 2001. Wilkerson branded the Bush Administration dangerously incompetent,

The 'cabal,' claimed Wilkerson, included Cheney, Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld, and former Pentagon desk warrior neocons Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith and Richard Perle. These figures are the front men for a web of neocon lobbyists, think tanks, institutes and media outlets in Washington.

Gen. William Odom, former chief of the ultra secret National Security Agency, and a leading military thinker, called Bush's Iraq adventure 'the biggest disaster in the history of the US.'

Even more shockingly, Republican elder statesman, Gen Brent Scowcroft, national security advisor to Bush's father, accused Bush Jr of being 'wrapped around the little finger' of Israel's PM Ariel Sharon.

Scowcroft has finally said aloud what no one in official Washington or the media dared to utter. His accusation helps explain much about the Bush Administration's foreign policies and why they seem so often to damage rather than promote US interests.

While I was recently in London, leaked cabinet documents shockingly revealed that shortly before Bush invaded Iraq, he actually told PM Tony Blair he 'wanted to go beyond Iraq' by occupying Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. This is the first time we have concrete evidence that two key US allies were in the White House's crosshairs.

Meanwhile, the FBI, intensifying its war against the neocons, is investigating two senior officials of the Israel lobby, one of Washington's most sacred cows, and a necon Pentagon analyst for passing national security secrets to Israel. Washington neocons are making frantic efforts to suppress these investigations and depict them as minor mischance rather than the beginning of a major spy scandal.

CIA is deeply split between professional officers furious national intelligence was corrupted by Cheney and his neocons to sell the Iraq war, and a minority eager to tell the White House whatever it desires. This column has reported for a decade how patriotic CIA officers were being demoted or fired for daring to oppose the lies being sold by pro-war neocons.

Moreover, Bush and Cheney now face a Republican and Pentagon revolt over their disgraceful defense of torture, and possible trouble from the Supreme Court.

'We do not torture,' Bush insisted from Panama, which his father invaded in 1989. Of course not, Mr President. You call it 'forceful interrogation.'

Meaning: being kidnapped, drugged, stripped naked, thrown into a refrigerated, lightless underground cell, starved, deprived of sleep (a favorite KGB technique) and sensory contact, covered with urine and excrement, severely beaten , anally raped, subjected to mock executions, given hideously painful electrical shocks, and strapped onto a special board and immersed in water until confessing or drowning.

This is what suspects are enduring in America's secret, outsourced prisons around the world. Abu Ghraib's horrors were only a foretaste. Adding to the sense of moral disgrace that hangs over Bible-Belt Republicans, they are now trying to launch their own criminal investigation of who leaked reports of secret US prisons in Eastern Europe most likely Romania, Poland and Bulgaria - instead of demanding they be shut down at once.

Sen. John McCain, an American war hero, is leading efforts in Congress to ban torture and compel observance of the Geneva Conventions which form part of existing American law.

When I was a US GI, we were taught the Conventions were sacred. They protected all at war, as CIA's renowned former chief in Afghanistan, Milt Bearden, so brilliantly observed in a recent article.

But those little Torquemadas of the modern Inquisition, Bush and Cheney, who both dodged regular military service in wartime, claim the Geneva Conventions are bunk.

Bush actually threatened to veto McCain's bill. Cheney keeps advocating torture. Even KGB would have been embarrassed. Americans will one day look back on this period with the same revulsion and shame as they do on McCarthy's era.

  • I had a long comment that was just sucked up by the Xanga gods (actually, my son was distracting me and I think I forgot to submit it.)

Meh. It wasn't important. This is an interesting post, E. I don't agree with 100% of it, but what the hell do I know? I'm a dread-headed libertarian who lives among cows and Bible-thumpers.
But I think that headline says it all:
AMERICANS ARE RUNNING OUT OF PATIENCE WITH THEIR 'WAR PRESIDENT' Well, yeah. I don't doubt it.

Dissent is not a public service if it undermines a president's ability to do his job on an international level. We have sent that man all over the world, trailing those preconceived notions about his tactics, his grammer and his familial ties. Can't blame the world for hating him. Neither can we blame anyone but our own egos. We all think we could do a better job than he is, but until one of us steps up and does...why give power to the opposition? We don't have to stand behind Bush's ideas or him as a person, but regardless...he's all we've got right now.

  • We shall agree to disagree, Mama.    I can assure you that it isn't MY DISSENT that is undermining Bush's reputation in the world community.

I've known a lot of libertarians.  Libertarians are merely conservatives who embrace freedom of speech and a "live and let live" philosophy, "as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else."  Meh.

  • The main thing to catch my eye was the idea that Bush wants to attack Arabia and Pakistan. It is just bluff unless Bush is indeed as mad as a hatter and really does think God is on his side, because America does not have the staying power to have daily hundreds of body bags coming in on charter flights. That would be a real war without the support of the general public, not something Amercia can keep up. If Bush thinks he can do it when he cannot even sort out Iraq, then he is a bigger idiot than I thought. The sooner Britain and his other allies desert him to show the world just how alone America really is on this misadventure, the better.

  • "The Limbaughtistas" Good for you. Making a wonderful new word! ; )

  • No, E. Not your dissent. Dissent in general. By the media. I find it to be a waste of energy and resources. Too much time being negative will not have positive results.

Just waitin' for the "one who is going to bring peace", ya know? And I will surely run the other way.

  • Dissent is what has made this country great. Think of all the great movements in this country from the civil rights movement to the woman's movement. They all had their share of dissent mixed with a faith in God. Martin Luther King, maybe the greatest dissenter of all, went preaching with the Bible in one hand and the constitution in the other. This is exactly what we need so badly today. These criminals need to be charged and the world needs to know that this isn't American but a bunch of right wingers hidden in their fake Christianity. If dissent would have been louder during the Crusades maybe that period of time could nave been changed. You look at all the movements, from Martin Luther to Martin Luther King, and you will see that dissent is needed in life. Jesus himself was a dissenter against the religiouslity of the pharisees. Those who wish to sit on the sidelines and say nothing will be missing an opportunity to change history for the good.BTW, great article J.

  • so much politics........ just stopping by to say hey

  • ^ I second that (too much politics). I just wanted to say thanks again for taking time to throw out some thoughts on the discussion topic I had posted.

  • Still gonna disagree with ya, Mama.  Citizen awareness, questioning of authority, and dissent when necessary are, as Shertzaik says, a Good Thing.  And freedom of the press is one of the few resources we have in defense of our liberties.  Bush "tore his drawers", as certain black folks say, by waging pre-emptive war; by yammering about an "Axis of Evil" and blustering "If you're not with us you're against us"; by rejecting the Kyoto Protocol, the international war crimes tribunal, the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and just about every other international agreement you can think of; and by his various "trade agreement" initiatives which have a tendency to enslave the people of "developing" nations.  People in the rest of the world do NOT need the American media to tell them that America is a rogue state; they're quite aware of it all on their own, I can assure you.  Are you not aware of the many thousands protesting in the various European capitals?  I'm astonished at such apparent naivete.

And for those of you who express a dislike of politics - a Romanian and a Kiwi, no less - I can only conclude that AMERICAN politics does not concern you because you FEEL that you're not affected by it.  Much like my Canadian college roommate during the Viet Nam era, who didn't have to worry about the military draft as the rest of us did.  It always amazes me when people seem unable or unwilling to understand how the personal and the political intertwine.  Were you not alive during the reign of Ceaucescu, so_tlc?  Did the political become personal for you during his tenure?  Can you see how it might have for some Romanians?  Can you see how decades of Communist rule have adversely affected present-day Romania?  Are you at all happy that SOME Romanians were political enough to work toward his overthrow?

Ah, well.  Thanks for stopping by to say hi.  When poverty or persecution hits you square in the face, or hits someone you dearly love, then perhaps those of you who feel that I am too "radical" will gain a little more insight into the nature of my peculiar madness.

  • I am affected by American politics as I live here right now. And I am trying to understand...but it makes my head swim. I have never been one much for politics - never been politically minded even in my own country - so my understanding is shallow at best. Besides, to better understand politics it seems one must also delve into History...another subject I never took kindly to. My geography is just as bad. *Shakes head*

In relation to my blog post: When does a man become a "dirty old man". Not sure. But mine is only 30. I think he is a dirty old man because I am 2 years his junior.

  • Politics.  Politics is like a deep vat of shit, and anyone who jumps into it is going to stink of shit because that is the nature of politics.

However, To clean out the vat of shit, someone has to jump in there with a shovel and a hose.  If no one steps forward to do that nasty but necessary job, the vat of shit will continue to fill until it overflows and shit is all over EVERYTHING and we will all be smothering in it.

As an American citizen, it isn't just my right to talk about politics.  It is my DUTY.  And it is my duty to try to understand them and to scream real loud if the current political trends are taking us away from our Constitution and the basis of our civilization.

And at this time, we are in dire peril of being swept up in the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rowe shitstorm of the century.  If we let this fanatical idiots continue to rampage unchecked, they will do every bit as much damage as Adolf Hitler did in Nazi Germany.

Holy Fucking Shit.  Secret gulags spread out across Europe which exist solely for the purpose of TORTURING people--many of whom are INNOCENT of any crime?  Jesus must be weeping in Heaven over this.

How could ANY American--even the most hard core "My Country:  LOVE it or LEAVE it" type not be appalled and horrified of this RAPE of our national honor?

I have screamed and screamed and screamed this--but it still doesn't seem to be screamed loud enough.  I EXPECT my country to behave honorably.  Even if EVERY OTHER FUCKING COUNTRY IN THE WORLD is torturing people and blowing shit up, I EXPECT MY COUNTRY TO BEHAVE HONORABLY.

If we do not behave honorably, we are NO DIFFERENT in ANY WAY from the evil doers.  No different at all.

    Why don't people SEE this?

    Why?

  • whoops, a few grammar mistakes in here.........can i still get some credit?????

  • Thanks for sharing the insights, JBW and the gang! I enjoyed reading them!

    D.I. Edifice

  • Politics takes time to digest and when you are finished, you will certainly have indigestion. So it is a thankless task to read, analyze, and commit oneself to it. However, if I may get all bumper stickery "Turn on to politics, before it turns on you."

Thankless or no, taking a stand, and being vocal, is our obligation. It's good to read that many are up to the task especially in these times, when doing so is clearly, and by no means, a safe thing to do.

I would thank you for the post but then I will have contradicted myself. Aw, screw it, thanks for the column.

  • And as long as apologizing for bad grammar/spelling/mechanics is permitted: I am sorry for abusing the comma and the heinous redundancy of the verb "do."  All other infractions were premeditated however insipid they may be.

  • sorry, I don't have the comment, but if you've read it, that suffices. You can legally go and live in Romania, you need a reason.Any american citizen has a 3 months visa by default there and then you apply for one with a reason(not a strict one). The laws are not strict, and the living expenses are very small, plus good  fresh market food.

no, I never run out of options, theoretically, although last week I had a really hard time making a decission about the place I live , and I thought I had no options, but...........................the run is rising on my side of the hill.

Why would you wanna go to Romania?

    Don't delete it!!!!!!!!!!.

  • Eccentrique : "Ceaucescu, ... Can you see how decades of Communist rule have adversely affected present-day Romania?..."

A moot point but it has to be said. Ceaucescu and the other Soviet backed dictators, indeed, the Soviet Union itself after Lenin were fascists, not socialist or communists. Using a term to describe yourself does not make it so.

  • RYC on Creed of Kings site: Thank You. I felt your passion and it made me cry.

  • Genius... complication... pretender... politics

  • RYC: Oh I'm sorry I'm not 21...I just put that out there because after 21 I'm legal so does it really matter?. Actually my oldest daughter is 21 ...Yes the modern woman is a difficult breed, because after 2000 years of feeling like we were wrong, we finally figure out that we are aok. . Now we are trying to find our place in the world; not to lord over man but to figure out how to comfortably be by his side. We are experiencing growing pains of sorts. Actually we are all still little girls looking for a father figure (The Creator in our men) and Women looking for a partner to ride the rough seas. It's sort of a conundrum (sp); which is why we may appear to have more self-confidence, but not really.

Thank you for the C.S. book selections. I write supernatural but I don't read too much fantasy. I'm more a sci-fi/supernatural woman. I may read some of his non-fiction though because the titles are appealing. Yes, I was baptized a disciple of Christ. (I say that because currently "Christian" is being poorly defined.)

Oh no Mr. Right, is not Officer Greek God; Officer Greek God is running interference. I suspect the same (married, living with someone you know.) When my light turned on, the guys start pouring out of the wood work; the hard part is to stay focused. No my choice was mr. right but Mr. Right is not ready for me. Sorry for the blog in your comment but that was a lot not leave unanswered.

  • The fundamental difference between McCarthy and Bush is that McCarthy went on a witch hunt for individual American citizens to fuel paranoia and feed a political agenda.  Anyone that thinks that terrorism isn't the most important issue of our day, and terrorists the greatest danger to our national security is a fool.

And if Bush is such a pawn of Israel why has he admonished them (wrongly I say) so many times for their response to terrorists.  I have a huge amount of respect for Israel, because they, as a country, have always done what we should have been doing.  They dug in their heels and they stood their ground.  The fought back when attacked, and they've refused to allow themselves to be manipulated or threatened by terrorists, the lowest form of life on this lump of rock.

Bush could learn a thing or two from Ariel Sharon.

  • I feel like such a fool now.

  • pearl harbor, and the list continues...just once...out of all the woodcut carvings could a real man stand out and just admit what the fuck is really going on in the political arena...

I wasn't born yet but I often remark on JFK's speeches as coming close to telling it out straight and Bobby too....they may have served as examples for anyone who would want to be a "stand up guy" in the Washington scene...skull crushing with a good pair of Bally's on or better and clean manicured fingers...

sometimes I think the history we are taught in school is propaganda more than something we can learn a lesson from because hell yes,,,,history sure does repeat itself to an almost predictable degree....the problem then I do believe is that the spin doctors were not as "fast acting" on issues as they are today....

    loved the post matey....more....

  • DJDashRiprock, do you respect Israel for their modern day apartheid? I respect them because they have hidden it so wonderfully. Oh naive one, obviously you do not understand terrorism. What do you think shock and awe is? I guess that's not terrorism. Try explaining that to the many children who go throughout the night scared to death. I'm just so glad that they got them WMD's out of Iraq before the terrorist got them. I feel so much safer. And I guess you haven't  noticed the video cameras on every corner and in shopping mall parking lots (guess we're seeking out those terrorists). Bush could learn a lot from alot of people (Ghandi comes to mind), but Sharon isn't one of them.

  • "Gen. William Odom, former chief of the ultra secret National Security Agency, and a leading military thinker, called Bush's Iraq adventure 'the biggest disaster in the history of the US.' "

Of the stampeding herd of idiotic statements that one wins it by a nose. So I won't sit here and waste my time parsing the rest of this drivel. Yes. I read the whole thing. Reading it made me feel like a misquito at a nudist colony. There are simply too many targets in what you posted Nsync-trick. When I read the majority of the response I feel like I'm watching Alice in Wonderland. I giggled a few times at sheer warped reality ...especially at shertziaks reply to DJ. Honestly, that made me bust out laughing. The poor soul. Israel... Apartheid? LOL. He must have a funhouse mirror.  The moral equivalence in his thinking is utterly sad and hilarious. I was shocked and awed by it.

I would respond more to shertzaik but why? How do you reason with a miserable warped illogical position. One is hamstrung from the beginning. One cannot reason with shertzaik in the first place, that reason-ground doesn't exist. It would be folly. Furthermore NONE of those here that agree with you are looking for any answers. There's a bunch of hand wringing about how nasty politics can be. NONE here doubt their dearly held positions and I bet lack the drive to delve deeper. If any do then I welcome their sincere inquiry. Otherwise I'm preaching to the choir or talking to a stump these days.

Thanks for your comments on my blog.
