  • We Interrupt Our Regularly Scheduled Thanksgiving Programming....

....to bring you this special political announcement.

I'm not a big fan of Antonin Scalia and his "strict constructionist" views, as I think that the Constitution is or should be a "living document".  And on some level I do agree with Zaphod Beeblebrox, quoted below.  But our beloved Mr. Bush is a horse of an altogether different color.  Note, incidentally, his Xtian manner of expressing himself when the cameras aren't rolling....

Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a

       goddamned piece of paper'

       By Doug Thompson

       Capitol Hill Blue

       Friday, December 9, 2005

Last month, Republican Congressional leaders filed into the

Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk

about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.

Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked

period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks,

caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American

Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent

conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose

    renewal.

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more

onerous provisions of the act could further alienate

conservatives still mad at the President from his botched

attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the

    Supreme Court.

"I don't give a goddamn," Bush retorted. "I'm the President

and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way."

"Mr. President," one aide in the meeting said. "There is a

valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the

    Constitution."

"Stop throwing the Constitution in my face," Bush screamed

back. "It's just a goddamned piece of paper!"

I've talked to three people present for the meeting that day

and they all confirm that the President of the United States

called the Constitution "a goddamned piece of paper."

And, to the Bush Administration, the Constitution of the

United States is little more than toilet paper stained from

all the shit that this group of power-mad despots have dumped

on the freedoms that "goddamned piece of paper" used to guarantee.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, while still White House

counsel, wrote that the "Constitution is an outdated document."

Put aside, for a moment, political affiliation or personal

beliefs. It doesn't matter if you are a Democrat, Republican

or Independent. It doesn't matter if you support the invasion

or Iraq or not. Despite our differences, the Constitution has

stood for two centuries as the defining document of our

government, the final source to determine - in the end -- if

    something is legal or right.

Every federal  official - including the President - who takes

an oath of office swears to "uphold and defend the

    Constitution of the United States."

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says he cringes when

someone calls the Constitution a "living document."

""Oh, how I hate the phrase we have—a 'living document,'"

Scallia says. "We now have a Constitution that means whatever

we want it to mean. The Constitution is not a living organism,

    for Pete's sake."

As a judge, Scalia says, "I don't have to prove that the

Constitution is perfect; I just have to prove that it's better

    than anything else."

President Bush has proposed seven amendments to the

Constitution over the last five years, including a

controversial amendment to define marriage as a "union between

a man and woman." Members of Congress have proposed some

11,000 amendments over the last decade, ranging from repeal of

the right to bear arms to a Constitutional ban on abortion.

Scalia says the danger of tinkering with the Constitution

comes from a loss of rights.

"We can take away rights just as we can grant new ones,"

    Scalia warns. "Don't think that it's a one-way street."

And don't buy the White House hype that the USA Patriot Act is

a necessary tool to fight terrorism. It is a dangerous law

that infringes on the rights of every American citizen and, as

one brave aide told President Bush, something that undermines

the Constitution of the United States.

But why should Bush care? After all, the Constitution is just

    "a goddamned piece of paper."

"Look property is theft, right? Therefore theft is property.

Therefore this ship is mine, Okay?"

-Zaphod Beeblebrox, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

  • I knew the situation was bad, I just didn't have any idea it was THIS bad.

  • The Bush clan is your Royal Family. The majority said exactly that,in a poll before the last election. The American people were the ones that were saying this.

When you you hand ANYONE unchecked authority to do as they please, support them despite undeniable wrongdoing, prop them up like one of the most courageous groups of men and women in history, you create a monster.History has shown us the path before.Unbridled and unchecked lust for blood, wrapped in the flag, and someone so full of himself he tells us he's got direct line to God,and God picks up.

Houston..and the rest of America..You have a problem..

  • This makes my blood boil...  "goddamned piece of paper"?  That ass hole and his cronies need to be re-educated with the Federalist Papers and other documents that will teach them the basic foundations this country was founded on.  He sounds like a fascist.  A Xtian power tripping fascist who cloaks himself as an angel of light to fool the ignorant.

  • John,
Excellent words here sir...very sad...very true. I would like to take this moment to make a quick stand on something. Not all of us who believe in Jesus Christ are supporters of the patriot act, war, and shitting on the constitution. In fact, I have been a long time contributor to the News Underground ( http://www.thenewsunderground.com )which has followed this patriot act mess since day one ...Sadly, I do agree that "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." I just don't agree that the so called "Christian Right" hold many (if any) of the views expressed by Jesus. So I just wanted to be one voice out there pointing out that just because someone says they are a Christian and may go to a church on Sunday mornings does not mean that they subscribe to the example of Christ.
You know, I am in the middle of writing an article called "Engaging a culture of Fear." The sad fact is that most Americans are too afraid of the world around them to take a stand against things like the Patriot Act. Afraid of Anthrax in their mailboxes. Afraid of Planes falling from the sky and into their buildings...afraid of their own neighbors. It's simply not enough to point out to them that things like the Patriot Act are taking away their freedoms. Freedom isn't their problem. Fear is. People in todays society crave safety for themselves and their families, and they are willing to give away as much freedom as it takes to achieve those ends. Sadly, soon it is probable that we will have soldiers in the streets and people of middle eastern heritage under government watch. Why? Simply because we have focused on our freedoms rather than our fears.
Obviously, these are just my thoughts...I don't expect anyone out there to have to agree. Thank you for the Blog, it is truly needed in these times.

  • Rob, you're the seminarian, and it's been years since I read my Bible.  Isn't there a Scripture that says something like, "When the people shall cry 'Peace and safety!', then shall the end come." ?

At any rate, anyone who had been reading my blog for any length of time knows that I am one of the few "left-wing" Christians out here - a voice crying in the wilderness, saying "Make straight the paths of the Lord, and don't forget the social justice!"  I still consider myself a fundamentalist, but my interpretation of the Bible and my priorities are quite different from the average fundy's.

Last night on Nightline they had 39 Ohio women on there, all mothers who had lost a son in Iraq.  Perhaps needless to say, none of them was Cindy Sheehan.  While two or three of them expressed mild opposition to the war, virtually every one of them expressed variations on the theme of "I can't accept that my son died in vain!"  One of them said, "I refuse to let it happen!"  I'm sorry for their loss, of course, but it's mindlessness like that that allows Der Fuhrer Bush to get away with what he does.

  • I just stole that to post on my site. Absolutely incredible. I simply cannot fathom the ignorance in the Oval Ofiice.

  • Eccentrique,

Thank you for sharing. Your posts are always enlightening, and I just wanted to thank you for speaking truth in an era when it is obviously politically incorrect to do so.....

  • I "stole" the one quote also Ecc: It kinda just came out as I had read your excellent blog first..I've linked it as I didn't explain so hopefully I don't send you a looney-tune..ttyl..Scott

  • Oh.  my.  God.

    He ACTUALLY SAID THAT??

The constitution nothing but a goddam piece of paper?

    Bus IS the antichrist.

That is the most terrifying statement I have ever heard.

Why isn't this on the front page of every newspaper in the country?  On a scroll across the bottom of every newscast?

Thus the myth of the "liberal media" is exposed.

Wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross indeed.

    God help us all.

  • Thanks for the edumacation

  • Dear John,

Quite alarming.  Thank you for sharing!

    D.I. Edifice

  • do you have a url for this, so I can stick it on my site?

  • Hey there John.. how are you? For some reason, my heart is heavy for you.

  • I know I should be worked-up about what Bush said, but it doesn't surprise me as much as Scalia's inability or unwillingness to understand figuartive language. Oh, I just want to growl at it all.

Before I started with this Xanga I had no idea that there were so many Christians who were angry at the misrepresentation of their religion by zealots and the government. I was angry that I heard no voices speaking out. It turns out those voices were just not making it to my mainstream. I am heartened to read your posts and the comments. Even though it seems these are dark times, they were much darker in my mind before, when I thought the good majority Christian world was sold on the right. I get a big woohoooo and yeehaw out of this forum. It gives me hope.

On another note, I had a Xtian v. Christian encounter today at Target. The woman in front of me was trying to force the cashier to say "Merry Christmas" over and over again. She was yelling at the young girl (Christian if I read her crucifix necklace correctly). The Xtain looked to me as if I would agree with her. The cashier looked sheepishly at me. I told the crazy woman not to spiritually molest the cashier please. She ran off screaming and mocking me to her husband "Come on honey, I have to go spiritually molest some other people today!" The cashier looked to me and said "I'll tell you 'Merry Christmas' if you want." We both laughed a little. Her timing was excellent.  So, maybe it wasn't the best turn of phrase, but it was all I had at the moment. It just isn't love if you have to force it.

To that man, that Bush, the constitution is just a piece of paper, and the celebration of the birth of a currently recognized and worshipped God is just a political smoke screen. He is a cancer on the secular as well as the spiritual.

  • rabookie,

Between the Target woman and Eccentrique's new xanga pal Sends, Christianity is looking like a cult of brute arrogance and raving lunacy. Truly sickening.

  • I am proud to be from Wisconsin...home of Senator Russ Feingold, the only US Senator to vote against the Patriot Act,and now attempting much to see it not get passed. Remembering backwhen Russ first put his name in for the Senatorial Race,I did not think this guy had a chance..He actually lives in my general direction of Milwaukee..Not only did he win but I admire his brand of politics.I have never been involved in the actual campaign of various  politicians in the past..Now,I am volunteering for Russs' reelection as well as Lise Vanusteren who is running as a DEm for Senator in Maryland.

Lise is a potential to watch for..Not only is she a Wisconsin girl originally..She is a psychiatrist who had been a consultant for the CIA...profiling WORLD LEADERS..their personality traits..body language.speaking patterns etc..etc.. Well one day she profiled W and then knew that she had to run for political office..And she is..One Senator..at a time one or which ever branch of Govt.these various political hopefuls are running for..We need a whole new breed of Politician...Little by little if we all help these kind of candidates with our time or letters and be proactive..It really can make a difference...one person at a time.

  • RYC: Espinoso Baca, Je ne sais pas Sends. But since coming to xanga Christianity is looking a whole lot more like I had thought it would. There are detailed, caring, well spoken, passionate and compassionate Christians here. I've heard of the Xtians out here too, but they give me gas so I don't visit their pages very often. They would likely be as unaccepting of my religious choice as they are when I meet them face to face. But not one of the people with whom I have I corresponded has chastized me for not being Christian and not one has proseltyzed me either. It's refreshing. Perhaps I am naive. But I like it that way for now.

  • "Letter of the law" people like Scalia: Just like the Pharisees who were so upset at Jesus for healing people on the Sabbath.

  • What a disturbing article. Even though I am a Bush-hater, it seems unlikely that he actually would've said that the Constitution is "goddamn piece of paper." Not that he wouldn't THINK it, but this guy seems to take his job very seriously, perhaps too seriously. So to say such a self-condeming phrase in front of other people just seems illogical, that's all. I suppose in the era of streaming videos and constant skepticism, perhaps this one worked to Bush's advantage, since it wasn't captured on camera.

If he did say such a thing, though, it should be brought up in his impeachment trial.

  • RMC: Ecc...the proper response to a turd stirrer is "E no eat poo, E no eat poo." :)

  • most americans don't even know what the Patriot Act is; nor it's evil twin brother...They are just scared and when you are afraid you will do anything not to be afraid even if means that you lose your rights. Scary thought.

  • Eccentrique,

Hey, sorry you had to endure the shameful character assasinations of the user "sends" and pals on his/her message board. Their tactics are disgraceful, and I'm disheartened that "Christians" would stoop so low.

  • not surprising though eh?  poop flinging monkies just doubled in population while we speak...

    jm

  • You're right, I am a guy. 'Tray' is short for Travis.

  • RYC: Syndication? Please, don't even inflate my ego and encourage me. Even in jest, it may be enough to make me real ugly! Like Frankenstein's monster.
