"The Unit"
No, this has nothing to do with Martin Chuzzlewit's "organ".....
Article Launched: 3/26/2006 12:06 AM'Unit's' military expert has fighting words for BushBy David Kronke, TV CriticU-EntertainmentEric Haney, a retired command sergeant major of the U.S. Army, was a founding member of Delta Force, the military's elitecovert counter-terrorist unit. He culled his experiences for"Inside Delta Force" (Delta; $14), a memoir rich withharrowing stories, though in an interview, Haney declines witha shrug to estimate the number of times he was almost killed.(Perhaps the most high-profile incident that almost claimedhis life was the 1980 failed rescue of the hostages in Iran.)Today, he's doing nothing nearly as dangerous: He serves as anexecutive producer and technical adviser for "The Unit," CBS'new hit drama based on his book, developed by playwright DavidMamet. Even up against "American Idol," "The Unit" showsmuscle, drawing 18 million viewers in its first two airings.Since he has devoted his life to protecting his country insome of the world's most dangerous hot spots, you might assumeHaney is sympathetic to the Bush administration's currentplight in Iraq (the laudatory cover blurb on his book comesfrom none other than Fox's News' Bill O'Reilly). But he's alsosomeone with close ties to the Pentagon, so he's privy toinformation denied the rest of us.We recently spoke to Haney, an amiable, soft-spoken Southerngentleman, on the set of "The Unit."Q: What's your assessment of the war in Iraq?A: Utter debacle. But it had to be from the very first. Thereasons were wrong. The reasons of this administration fortaking this nation to war were not what they stated. (ArmyGen.) Tommy Franks was brow-beaten and ... pursued warfarethat he knew strategically was wrong in the long term. That'swhy he retired immediately afterward. His own staff could tellhim what was going to happen afterward. We have fomented civil war in Iraq. We have probably fomentedinternecine war in the Muslim world between the Shias and theSunnis, and I think Bush may well have started the third worldwar, all for their own personal policies.Q: What is the cost to our country?A: For the first thing, our credibility is utterly zero. So wedestroyed whatever credibility we had. ... And I say "we,"because the American public went along with this. They votedfor a second Bush administration out of fear, so fear is whatthey're going to have from now on.Our military is completely consumed, so were there a realthreat - thankfully, there is no real threat to the U.S. inthe world, but were there one, we couldn't confront it. Rightnow, that may not be a bad thing, because that keeps Bush fromtrying something with Iran or with Venezuela. The harm that has been done is irreparable. There are morethan 2,000 American kids that have been killed. Tens ofthousands of innocent Iraqis have been killed - which no onein the U.S. really cares about those people, do they? I neverhear anybody lament that fact. It has been a horror, and thisadministration has worked overtime to divert the Americanpublic's attention from it. Their lies are coming home toroost now, and it's gonna fall apart. But somebody's gonnahave to clear up the aftermath and the harm that it's donejust to what America stands for. It may be two or threegenerations in repairing.Q: What do you make of the torture debate? Cheney ...A: (Interrupting) That's Cheney's pursuit. The only reasonanyone tortures is because they like to do it. It's aboutvengeance, it's about revenge, or it's about cover-up. Youdon't gain intelligence that way. Everyone in the world knowsthat. It's worse than small-minded, and look what it does.I've argued this on Bill O'Reilly and other Fox News shows. Iask, who would you want to pay to be a torturer? Do you wantsomeone that the American public pays to torture? He's anemployee of yours. It's worse than ridiculous. It's criminal;it's utterly criminal. This administration has been masters ofdiverting attention away from real issues and debating thesilly. Debating what constitutes torture: Mistreatment ofhelpless people in your power is torture, period. And (I'msaying this as) a man who has been involved in the mostpointed of our activities. I know it, and all of my mates knowit. You don't do it. It's an act of cowardice. I hearapologists for torture say, "Well, they do it to us." Which isa ludicrous argument. ... The Saddam Husseins of the world arenot our teachers. Christ almighty, we wrote a Constitutionsaying what's legal and what we believed in. Now we're goingto throw it away.Q: As someone who repeatedly put your life on the line, didsome of the most hair-raising things to protect your country, and to see your country behave this way, that must be ...A: It's pretty galling. But ultimately I believe in the goodand the decency of the American people, and they're startingto see what's happening and the lies that have been told. We're seeing this current house of cards start to flutteraway. The American people come around. They always do.THE UNITWhat: Action-adventure about special-ops unit.Where: CBS (Channel 2).When: 9 p.m. Tuesdays.---David Kronke (818) 713-3638 david.kronke@dailynews.com

Why does Eric Haney, retired command sergeant major, hate FREEDOM?
Quick, someone alert the Bill O'Reily Fox Police Team, another honorable veteran is guilty of TREASON! Let's make sure we all go out of our way to defame Haney's character! Quick, before anyone actually hears what Haney has to say!
Don't worry, Rush comes on in about an hour. I'm sure he'll do it. I hope the next post is something about "xxxxxx's instrument" just to keep the theme going.
good post, John. Do you have that book?
Awesome post!!! I have a friend who spent time in Delta Force with 8 confirmed kills in Panama all by hand-to-hand combat and he is very much against this war. He said that those "towel-heads" have way different thinking than us and we will never understand them (his words, not mine). But anyway, I spent a lot of time in the military and almost all of my ex-soldiers disagree with this war. This guy has it right on when he said the roof is caving in on this administration. I will be very surprised if he makes it through 2009!
RYC: Thanks
just wanted to check out the competition and say hello
This article is very refreshing. It's good to know that a soldier of his status is aware of the truth. Hopefully, people will listen.
wow. i'd have to say, the majority of what this guy says has been said repeatedly... not to lessen it's value in any way. but the part about torture and who would i want to do it... very compelling argument.
ryc: i know this doctor breached every confidentiality law in the state and then some. i'm sickened by it. my sister and i were talking about the really stringent privacy laws on the books these days and wondered how many of our own doctors talk about us when we walk out the door. i don't like my mother, but i seriously am considering advising her to sue.
and yes, it is irksome that "they" have all the money. these days, john, i'd really like a stab at a chunk of cash myself.
Intelligent life on earth... judging by some of the specimins I teach I would have to say no hehe
Hi! Thanks for stopping by my site!
You are correct, I am a government employee. In the branch of the government (health care) that I work in, we work very hard. I cannot speak for the other branchs, especially those who work in Washington, D.C.
Have a wonderful evening/weekend!
ryc: i am writing them as fiction in the long works... but, except for smart mouths, they all look way better than i do. in fact, i talk about the best of them. at least my siblings. the beast gets what she gets. she'll never connect anything with herself, though. she's created her own fantasy past.
you mentioned Aldis in a comment. I love Aldis. It's like everything is at half price. Except so many times I don't have quarters for the carts b/c I hate coins.
Hey, great post.
To add a bit to it--did you notice how uncomfortable and ashamed Collin Powell looked in most newscasts where he was standing as a member of the "Bushwhackers"? I think CP is basically an honorable man who found himself in a very dishonorable situation and got himself the hell out of there as quick as he could.
I'm waiting to see HIS memoirs.
It should be very interesting.
WAKE UP, AMERICAN PUBLIC!! Your emperor is STARK NAKED. (And he is BUTT UGLY too)
"The Unit" shows

muscle, drawing 18 million viewers in its first two airings. THAT translates into 9 million per viewing, yet i see BBS advertising 21 million people, and let's not forget the Super Bowl-like numbers attached to CSI
Where the fuck is CBS coming up with these numbers???
i NOTICABLY didn't comment on torture...having grown up the WRONG colour in NYC our "finest" done instilled the Cheney principle in us long time ago
Thanks for posting this. As someone who voted for Bush out of coercion by my pastor, I repent on a daily basis.
And thank you for your comment. But my wisdom is more an illusion than a reality. I get it right about 10% of them time -- even a broken clock is correct twice a day.
RYC: I'm a little concerned about MustangSally hopping my husband!
I'm going to have to come back and read your post this afternoon.
