West Point Graduates Organize against the War
by James C. Ryan
We mince no words. Time is of the essence. Iraq is a human and political
catastrophe, stark testament to the deceitful behavior of the Bush
administration. The dangers are clear and present, and too many human beings
are dying for an ignoble cause. The preemptive war launched against Iraq on
March 20, 2003 stands illegal to its roots. Premised on lies, misstatements, and
subterfuge, the destruction of that sovereign nation and its people has
destroyed the reputation of America, perilously debilitating its
military. These malefactions, in violation of a host of international treaties,
protocols, and conventions, have placed the military, in particular its officer
corps, in legal and moral peril. West Point Graduates Against The War
(westpointgradsagainstthewar.org), a grassroots movement to redeem the honor of
our country, stands opposed to the Bush administration and its callous disregard
for honorable behavior. At issue -- which directly assaults the West Point
Honor Code -- are the falsehoods of the Bush administration, culminating in
Secretary of State Colin Powell's presentation to the United Nations on February
5, 2003.The West Point Honor Code -- "A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or
tolerate those who do" -- defines honor and duty as a way of life. This
provides graduates with a lifelong sense of duty, a shared responsibility for us
all to do the right thing, even admonishing our country's leadership when
democracy and its inherent freedoms are at stake.Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States, and West Point
class of 1915, was a champion of the right to dissent. "Here in America we are
descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels," he said, "men
and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we
never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion." His words inspire us to
act.Eisenhower was even clearer when it came to preventive war, the kind that
Bush and his chickenhawk ilk fancy so dearly. He stood foursquare against it.
"When people speak to you about a preventive war," said Eisenhower, "you tell
them to go and fight it. After my experience, I have come to hate
war."When West Point graduates took their commissioning oath of office, they
swore to protect the nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic. The
deceitful connivances of the current administration have resulted in a war
catastrophic to our nation's interests: politically, economically, militarily,
and morally. The time has come for West Point graduates to speak out about
these deplorable conditions. We will not serve the lies of this administration. To remain silent is to
tacitly serve. So we speak out, clearly and directly. We seek justice for all
victims of this illegal war, both servicemen and servicewomen, and the citizens
of Iraq. We stand opposed to the undoing of Constitutionally guaranteed
freedoms by this most dangerous, oppressive administration. And so, too, would
President Eisenhower."If all that Americans want is security, they can go to prison," he said.
"They'll have enough to eat, a bed and a roof over their heads. But if an
American wants to preserve his dignity and his equality as a human being, he
must not bow his neck to any dictatorial government."Nor shall we graduates of the United States Military Academy at West
Point.[James C. Ryan is a co-founder of West Point Graduates Against The War. He
is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, class of 1962. Ryan spent
five years in the army artillery with assignments in the United States and
Europe. Thereafter a businessman, he subsequently became a writer. He divides
his time between Istanbul, Turkey where he lives, and New York City where he
teaches in the summer at Columbia University. Father of four, Jim has eight
grandchildren.]

Wow... I wonder how Bush and Co. will take this. Will these cadets be labelled as unpatriotic and helping the terrorists win, as this administation always does when a dissenting voice comes onto the scene?
This was a great post, and so good to see that ALL sorts of"Patriotic Americans",are absolutely fed up and devastaded with the effects that this war has had on Iraq as well as the legacy it will be leaving here at home for Americans to grapple with for many generations to come!! Hoping that you are well, have a good weekend!

i can say with certainty i never thought i'd see this...
RYC: No, not recently. It's simply who I am and how I live.
I care too much about people, yet my own mental complexes caused me to do some terrible things to people in the past. One in particular was still haunts me every now and then. Even though I've forgiven myself, even though it wasn't intentional, even though I know I'm a good person, it doesn't change what's happened.
It's far from spiritual. In my other comment, I was putting it in the context of the person in question. It's mostly a psychological thing, if anything, although a little bit of spiritualism ties into it for myself, too.
I know I'm a good person. The kind of relations I've maintained for years with my friends is enough evidence for me, as is everyone I help with my advice when they need it (especially because it's advice that works). My actions and general goodwill towards others are what everyone knows me by around here, and it's been that way for years.
It was a mistake. A slip-up, an emotional moment of insanity. Whatever the cause, it's not part of me, and even then, it completely ruined me.
I can't imagine what it would be like to be punished for it now, nearly three years after the fact.
Consequently, I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like for "The Bish."
It touched a part of me that most stories can't. It's kind of rare to see this part of me like this.
I don't know if you've seen it, but this post for some reason calls to mind the song of Team America's "America... fuck yeah"
Wow. Just Wow.
THAT, my friends, is a patriotic American.
THAT, my friends, is a patriotic American who UNDERSTANDS and BELIEVES in the Constitution of the United States. Not someone who would glibly use it for toilet paper.
Why isn't THIS guy running for president?
(Last time I tried to post, the internet ate it, so my fingers are crossed.)
Great article! Wow! Perhaps Ryan will write a response to the President's address tonight?
RYCs: Thank you for your kind comments. I have been sadly remiss in getting back to my xanga friends. Re law school/lawyering--I'm interested in court research, journalism or academia. Two of those three don't require a law degree, but I'm a bit gun shy of yet another unmarketable liberal arts degree, as much as I would enjoy the journey. Re Barbara Ehrenreich--she's amazing! Have you visited her blog? http://ehrenreich.blogs.com/barbaras_blog/
I do have a kid, she's about 4 yo, eats hay, and baas...
=P
I'm going to apprentice under Benny Hinn now. I'm hoping to pick up that whole throw the jacket and make people fall down trick. If I can't get the Holy Ghost to be my trained puppy, I may end up doing something else. (The plan right now is to make a documentary in the Spring and then I'll be doing a church plant after that.)
RYC: Who is Mattie Stepanek?
This was an amazing kid that wrote
several books of poetry...His whole
family I think has MS...he dies a couple year back
if I remember correctly...He was an amazing kid.
Courtney bought me several of his books of poetry
a year or so back for my Birthday.
ryc: ty. i think most people are afraid to say, "you are so brave" to a guy. unless they are horny women.
ryc: yep. and they're full of shit, don't you think. we're both smarter than that.
Good post. Peace.
IF Eisenhower were to run now he'd be branded a coward and a commie
Tell them bro!! The reason for shutting down and restarting is because I don't want to take on a political or relgious stance on this new site. If someone would have read my previous posts, then they would have seen all those things. I'm burned out politically and with religion! That may sound bad, but it's the truth. Liberal Christianity is like walking along a thin wall that seperate two sides. One side is secular which most fall to like Pastor Matt. The other is a deeper, closer walk with God. I have slipped and landed squarely on my nuts between both. I can't say I have fallen either way completely but see clearly both sides. One thing for sure is I'll never be a conservative Christian!!
Hopefully I still have something to offer, but who knows. Take care, John.
So this guy is one of what, five people with a cheesy website? A leftover from the Vietnam era, apparently. Most likely the Bush Administration will say nothing, because this group is irrelevant. Wake me when these people have a reason to vote FOR them, not AGAINST Bush.
Yes linda died, and six months later after her death Paul married Heather mills thirty years his junior!
ryc: It is the BBC. I am in love with the online BBC. That's where the link was supposed to go. Why would I marry them/it/him/her? I don't know. It would be fun. They have access to the entire world. They probably speak with a really snazzy accent. In my imagination they are not drop-dead-gorgeous, but moderately attractive.... but maybe I wouldn't. I just realized that I was referring to 'it' as them.... disturbing.
I haven't married you because 1) I haven't met you, 2) you haven't asked me. I can't think of any others [but this flippance in your attitude towards marriage rather alarms me... To how many other people have you proposed to online
]
About the profile pic, I use it b/c I am a blond, and I sometimes like to play to people's conceptions of the dumb bimbo blond. I don't consider myself to be intellectually below average (I am going to be teaching students, after all, so I had better have a good self-image), but sometimes it's easier to let people think that.
RYC: I think 'they' the restaraunt owners put nothing more than lack of taste in the food. I think the public comes in with their viral sneezes and they blow the plexiglass out of the sneeze guards...oh and the buffet monitors use dirty dish towels to wipe the buffet areas. . .whatever it is...my mother in law LOVES it!
I frequent freakykal's xanga page, and I was curious. I found your page interesting and figured it merited another look.
You got me beat on the story of the 1935 all-star game.
The graph was about hurricanes on earth. The hurricanes are getting more intense as the oceans are heating up. I was disputing the usual thoughtless canard about what is causing the oceans to heat up.
